Parking Cameras Live in Wellington

The Market Street car park, owned by Wilkinsons is one of the biggest carparks in Wellington and very conveniently located right in the centre of town.  This week, new ANPR cameras and information signs were erected to help enforce the parking restrictions.

This car park has in the past had a chap sitting in the box taking payments, although he long since left. Since then the car park’s two hour limit has been poorly enforced, although all this about to change with the new ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) camera system.

ANPR systems will photograph your car on entry and take a note of the registration number.  It will do the same on your exit and work out just how long you have been there.  If you have been in there longer than the allowed two hours, then you can expect a fine in the post for £100.

While Wilkinsons are responsible for the car park, they are not able to discuss the fines in the store, so if you do get caught, then you’ll have you take it up with the enforcement company.

Forcing a two hour maximum stay, should help improve the turnover and therefore the availability of spaces for shoppers in the town.

Just another reason not to visit Wellington; just keep discouraging the people who have the money to spend. Does nobody wonder why so many shops and stores are empty?

So many shops are empty? Two large ones are, but the town is an example of what town centres need to be. Independent shops and cafés opening, charity shops providing a vital service for the community
Car parking in Wellington is widely abused, good to see we now have PCSO’s handing out tickets.

Visited Wellington for the first time in months last week, unaware of the new parking regime as it has been free for years now and has not been openly advertised. Have now been landed with a parking fine after shopping for just under 3 hours, (therefore apparently over the allotted 2 hour limit). Another nail in your coffin I’m afraid Wellington. It’s a shame for the long standing traders who I would like to see remain in business, but what is there to draw people there when along with the dying high street and market you risk the underhand tactics of the parking vampires. The life blood is truly being sucked out of what used to be a pleasant market town. I shan’t bother visiting again.

There type of parking fines are unenforceable invoices. Demands for payment from these companies are worded in such a way that they frighten you with court action if you don’t pay. It’s similar to me issuing you a demand for payment for standing next to me and threading court action. There are loads of helpful sites online that deal with this kind of parking fines so don’t just take my word for it. We have just ignored a parking fine from the wellington retail park. They will eventually increase then decrease the amount and finally halve it just to try and get something from you. They will rarely go to court. I’ve just received a parking fine from smart parking for parking near the pheasant inn in Wellington. Having spent just over 2 hours enjoying myself with guests in the local pub,I have now been forced to pay a fine for parking. The time restrictions were put in place due to trying to increase the trade but I’m a little confused as there were but a few cars left I the car in the late evening and I had to wait for my fish and chips to be made from fresh.

I had a parking fine the same as you for parking in the evening at the pheasant. I too was not aware of the time restriction. As it was my mistake i was prepared to pay the fine. I was willing to pay the reduced fee, however there was a discrepancy in the reduced fee, it was higher on my letter than the notice i later saw in the carpark. I took a photo of the sign and consequently they cancelled my parking fine

We also got caught, I think its an absolute out rage would have to agree after receiving the fine I did have a look and the signage is fairly clear so I cant actually complain about that, but like all the other innocent shoppers I didn’t know about the change in parking fees.

Wellington doesn’t need this its ridiculous. It would be “fair” to at least charge pro rata in respect of it being a Village location and not charged at London tariffs !!!!!!!!!!!! Why are these companies not monitored I will be paying it but alas I will not be visiting Wellington in hurry.

Just to update anyone wishing to visit Spiceland or any place in wellington in the evening after 6pm
Wilkinson car park has no time restrictions and is free parking till 5am.
The store manger mark link has been a great help and his understanding of the local towns economy and showing good community spirit for other businesses.
We at Spiceland appreciate and applaud wilkos for this gesture.

There are plenty of other car parks in Wellington if you need to stay for more than 2hrs. Always read the well placed signs before parking anywhere, that car park has always been free for 2hrs for the nearly 20 years I have lived in Wellington

I had two fines from here and challenged them both with a template letter from the internet- first was cancelled straight away , second I had to fill in further appeal with POPlA and have just had that fine cancelled as well. Their signs do not comply with regulations and therefore any fines do NOT need to be paid .

Hi, just received my penalty notice in the post. Does anyone have experience of not paying it, as advised in one of the threads above. Or further evidence that the signage is incorrect ? I shop nearly every weekend in Wellington but haven’t used this car park for years. Leason learnt, never shop at Wilkos again. I win whatever the outcome, as I shop there most weeks.

I’ve just received a fine for parking there for 13 mins this must be wrong !!! How easy is it to dispute the notice? Can it be cancelled by phone or do I have to write in to appeal?

I have just received a pcn from smart parking for overstaying in the market street car park. I thought it was just a long stay car park, saw nothing to suggest it wasn’t. Will go tomorrow to check signage. Not happy though, why would Wilson try and extort money from an already troubled community?
