Telford & Wrekin Council to launch lottery
Local community groups and charities could soon be able to tap into a major new fundraising scheme under plans for a lottery operated by Telford & Wrekin Council.
The online Telford & Wrekin Lottery, which will go before Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet next week, will provide a simple way for local community groups and charities to generate extra income.
It has become increasingly difficult for charities to access grant funding and the new lottery will provide an opportunity for groups to raise much needed funds.
Organisations that meet certain criteria will be able to benefit from this lottery.
Councillor Lee Carter said: “We know that local community groups and charities make a significant difference for many people in Telford.
“Local people are often best placed to understand the small but significant pieces of work, which make the biggest impact in their area.
“This lottery would give these organisations a great opportunity to raise money. Local people would be able to support the schemes they want to see in their local area.”
The lottery would support borough based good causes that tackle issues such as social isolation and health and wellbeing.
Funding could be provided to help maintain buildings such as village halls, local transport schemes, or initiatives such as lunch clubs for the elderly could be backed along with other good causes in the borough.
The council, working with partners, would provide the online lottery platform, using an established model already in use in other parts of the country.
People buying lottery tickets would be able to select which charitable cause they wanted to support, giving them the power to improve their local community in the way they want.
Cash prizes from £25 up to £25,000 would be available through the draw.
For every ticket sold, 56% of the money will be given to good causes, double the amount allocated by the National Lottery.
Councillor Lee Carter, added: “If backed by cabinet, the council will be speaking with local groups later in the year to get them involved with the scheme.
“The aim is to launch this new lottery as part of the council’s 50th anniversary celebrations next year.
“Now is the perfect time for people to start thinking about how we should be investing in Telford’s communities now and in the future.”
More details on the lottery will be available in the coming months
