I know we've had countless posts about Wellington's declining trade and about it becoming the mega capital of Shropshire's charity shops, and I know we're fed up of traders (and usually one in particular!) constantly pleading for council assistance or giving us their pearls of wisdom on where it all went wrong. Yet when push comes to shove they've proved themselves a right bunch of moaning malingerers who have lost the art of stimulating business. To mark the town's carnival week a competition for the best-dressed shop window was launched, and do you know how many of the town's dynamic, thrusting, go-ahead businesses entered? Just FOUR!! Not even the Chosen One deemed it important enough to enter. The one who one week can be relied upon to be quoted in some local journal saying how vibrant and exciting the town is, yet the next will be complaining that it is not getting a fair share of local government assistance. Wellington does not deserve success with such negative attitude.Yet you can be sure they will want their names or faces in the paper when something like a new bus station opens and all the civic worthies gather to spout a load of nonsense before retiring for some free butties, pies and drinks. I suppose those are the only occasions when they can honestly say they are helping themselves! And as for the bus station? An oversize edifice to oversize egos. But that's another story . . .
