Apple Day – Green Wood Centre in Coalbrookdale

October 14, 2017 @ 10:30 am - 5:00 pm

“This year’s Apple Day in the Ironbridge Gorge is on Saturday October 14th and promises to be another splendid event. Last year the occasion attracted several hundred people and proved a wonderful celebration of our national fruit, and a lot of serious fun besides.

An apple expert will be bringing a display of old and traditional varieties, many available for tasting, though the centrepiece again will be the huge one-tonne traditional twin-screw apple press, dating back to the mid-19C, and re-built by the Trust. It requires nothing more than muscle power to operate it and if the apple harvest is good as in previous years will pour out some 200 gallons of apple juice.

Once again, the Trust is inviting people from all over the county to bring their apples in the two weeks prior to the event. Please bring tree-picked apples only (not windfalls) and none from animal/poultry-grazed orchards, and take them to the Green Wood Centre in Coalbrookdale (See below for details) in the Ironbridge Gorge where they will be stored in a great pile or tump ready for use on the day.

In exchange for the fruit, people will be given a voucher entitling them on the day to some free delicious freshly-pressed apple juice, which one young participant last year described simply as ‘the most delicious apple juice in the world’! If preferred, you can bring apples to the event on the day. Alternatively, for those who have no apples or who have forgotten, don’t worry. You can purchase a bottle/bottles of the delicious juice during Apple Day.

The fun doesn’t stop at the pressing, either. There will be the usual live bands, Morris from the Ironmen & Severn Gilders, a hog roast stand with vegetarian option, a cider bar selling Coalbrookdale cider, sale of apple trees, Severn Gorge Countryside stand covering the work of the trust, craft demonstrations of the work of the Green Wood Centre including pole lathing, suitable for adults and children alike, and other free ‘hands on’ activities for children including ‘throwing a pot’, pressing their own apple juice using small presses, and facepainting. There will be a WI home-made food stall, the opportunity to purchase locally-produced country wines and ciders, a beekeepers’ stall, and umpteen other demonstrations, charity and information stalls, and small trade stalls.”

Please note that since this was added to the calendar stuff may have changed.  It’s not my fault, it just happens sometimes.
