Esther Cheo Ying ‘Black Country to Red China’
October 22, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
CHINA: PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE …
In the forward to her memoirs, Esther wrote that “it is hard to stay objective and see China for what it has become”. In this talk Esther will be describing how China has changed over the last century.
Esther Cheo Ying was born in Shanghai in 1932 and then left China, with her English mother and infant siblings, to escape the tyranny of Japanese occupation. She was raised in the Midlands, as she described in her first book: Black Country to Red China. She dedicated the book to her foster-mother who helped her discover how a child of mixed parentage could become a woman who would fight for what she believed in.
In 1949, Esther travelled to China to help the People’s Liberation Army achieve victory. She lived in China for eleven years and made many friends, both Chinese and Western. Subsequently she became a primary head teacher in England. In retirement she continues to write and is now completing a book, for imminent publication, provisionally titled: “A Half Chink Through the Wall”.
Please note that since this was added to the calendar stuff may have changed. It’s not my fault, it just happens sometimes.
