Can I recommend the Wrexham and Shropshire direct trains to London. I travelled from Wellington to London yesterday for £20 return which is a bargain. The trains are comfortable, staff friendly and the buffet even sells Shropshire real ale in bottles!! The service makes going to London easy and perhaps we need to use it to attract tourists to our area from the South. Has anyone else tried it?

I caught it back from London a few months ago. It’s a good service but I thought the carriages were a bit dated and the seats weren’t designed for fatties.

I have used it once. Tatty carriages, longer journey and terminates at the wrong station if you are making for the city centre. But it is cheaper than the Virgin train/route and you can almost be sure of getting a seat, unlike some of the virgin trains. I stood all the way to London on one occasion.

I think since wonkotsane and hagar used the trains, the rolling stock has been updated and refurbished – Yes there are plenty of seats and there are clean modern toilets!!! I recommend they try the service again. By the way London Marylebone is a much more pleasant station than Euston and its an easy 10 min walk to Oxford Street. I think Shropshire travellers need to support this service, otherwise Virgin will have a monopoly (and charge whatever they want!)

Mrs M uses the service four or five times a year and has done since its launch two years ago. The rolling stock was modernised last year and according to her is top-class for comfort. With that, the fares, reliability and service she now refuses to use the Virgin service with its change of trains at Birmingham, crowded carriages and more expensive fares. Wrexham & Shropshire had a 98% satisfaction rating in a National Passenger survey this year, the highest score ever achieved, so it must be doing something right.

I probably will use the service again – based on cost alone, but the cost increases when the cab fare from the station to destination is factored in. I used the motorbike last time I went to the city. Never again, surrounded by suicide jockeys on bikes, mopeds, scooters and taxis. No saving in time due to pedestrian speed progress in the city – the only plus was free parking! Before anyone asks my bike is a bit bigger than the one in my profile!

Just a quick update to say that the W and S railway are running 2 extra trains for the Summer holidays. There is an extra train on Friday evenings from London (leaving at 20-03pm) getting into Wellington at 22-58pm and there is an extra train on Saturdays mornings going to London leaving Wellington at 09-21am (arriving there at 12-15pm). These trains are running throughout August. Give them a try!

I like the London-Marylebone service but if you can be flexible about your time of travel, you can also get a Megatrain (which is actually just the same Virgin Train as everyone else goes on) from Birmingham New Street to London Euston for a fiver. (That is only one way though).

I’ve been told that if you have a Telford and Wrekin Flex card you can get a third off fares to London on Wrexham and Shropshire

  • Avatar Image Nick Jenkins5p said 2 weeks, 6 days ago:

Yes that’s right! – anyone with a T and W Council flex card can buy a return ticket for £26-40 (on any train showing your flex card), but you can only buy this ticket on the train for a Wellington or Telford to London Marylebone return ticket on W and S trains – which is a bargain. (It’s not available on-line or at stations). The flex card is free for any resident of the T and W area, from any of the leisure centres.
