Demolition of Ironbridge Power Station
Demolition of Ironbridge Power Station
Partial demolition of Ironbridge Power Station is scheduled to take place this Autumn if Shropshire planners agree.
Ironbridge Power Station sits just outside of Telford & Wrekin Borough Council jurisdiction.
The iconic towers do not feature in the plan. The work is restricted to a conveyor structure, but even so, the work is expected to result in 350 tonnes of waste to be removed from site, up Buildwas bank, through Lightmoor & Lawley to Junction 6 of the M54.
The structure being removed is circled red.
You have to question why they aren’t being told to use the existing rail line to remove some of the waste?
I wondered that too
Not many wastes disposal sites have a railway line that is used for offloading, few have them have one at all. Plus running a train would require the contractor to stockpile waste, which is usually frowned upon. It would however be a nice thought to be able to get a train in and use the old line, maybe they could do so if the entire power station is to be done.
Very sad it would be nice to preserve at least 1 power station in the country, they are a great piece of engineering
It would be a shame if the railway line is not brought back into use as a steam engine railway line (Dartmouth steam railway is a brilliant example as is Bridgnorth). Perhaps it could be extended and reconnected to some of the other tourist areas, it would bring in more visitors which would be good for the Ironbridge and Telford economy. Also, as we need more reservoirs, perhaps a huge reservoir or lake that could also be used for leisure activities and water sports, could be created on part of the land currently proposed for housing. Any housing built around it should be cottage style and modestly priced with a focus on village style community living. We have some brilliant architects and designers and in honour of Ironbridge and Its designer perhaps a competition for the best idea or design for Buildwas Power Station area would be a good idea.
This is our plan
