Aqueduct to America for Telford Footballer
A Telford teenager has been offered a potentially life-changing scholarship in the USA as she follows her ambitions of becoming a professional ladies’ footballer.
Caitlyn Smith, from Aqueduct, is currently on a BTEC in Sport level three course at Telford College of Arts and Technology.
When she finishes her TCAT studies, the 17-year- old has been offered a ‘Gold Elite’ scholarship through College Scholarships USA, which provides talented students and athletes with the opportunity to study at American universities, and compete in college sports.
Caitlyn, a former student of Idsall School in Shifnal, is a familiar face on the ladies’ football scene in Shropshire – she plays for Shrewsbury Town and Shropshire Under 18s, and also captains both Telford Under 18s and the TCAT team.
She said: “I’m really grateful to TCAT for everything they have done to help me. I’m learning the knowledge I need to guarantee my place in America when I finish the course.
“The course itself is fantastic. I’ve learned so much about sport, and the body while I’ve been here, as well as other practical skills, and the training facilities at the college are great.”
Sally Western, head of school for creative and leisure studies at TCAT, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for Caitlyn, which highlights the fabulous career progression opportunities available to our students.
“When she successfully completes her studies here at TCAT, Caitlyn will travel to America for four years, and get to choose a university to study towards a degree, whilst training to become a professional footballer.”
Caitlyn says: “My ambitions are to be a professional footballer, and I want to play in the Women’s Super League in England. As a lifelong Chelsea supporter, I would also love an opportunity to play at Stamford Bridge.”
