Guess WHO’s Back?

The time-LORD of British Saturday Night’s has finally returned to UK TV with season 2 episode 1: The Robot Revolution.

Before this review, I should probably tell you about my overall thoughts on Doctor Who. I Have been a fan way back since Christopher Eccleston in 2005 and have enjoyed most eras, including Chris Chibnall’s era thanks to Jodie’s performance as The Doctor. Personally Matt Smith is my favourite Doctor.

But back on to The Robot Revolution. This season kicks off with Ncuti Gatwa back as The Doctor for his second season with a new companion, Belinda Chandra played by Varada Sethu

First the good: You can tell the BBC had a bigger budget as the visuals in this episode look fantastic, especially the space scenes and the laser effects.

Ncuti once again now more in the role is a fun Doctor who I am slowing growing to love, it took me a while but come on he did take over from Tennant, probably the nation’s voted favourite Doctor.

Belinda is a welcome addition to the Whoniverse. I thought Belinda Chandra was a great character with just one mission for the Doctor, GET… HER…. HOME. Varada played Belinda with such charismatic charm and cheekiness. I like that at the end of the episode Belinda does not want to go on adventures, she wants to get home, and I am looking forward to seeing how this plays throughout Season 2.

The bad: as much as I praised The Doctor and his new companion Belinda and the visual effects. I sadly cannot give the writing as much credit.

Whilst the episode itself is not bad and is certainly a better opener than Season 1’s Space Babies. Russell T Davis just lacked the imagination he had when writing for Doctor Who all those years ago with Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant.

However, I am looking forward to Episode 2: Lux airing Saturday April 19th on BBC ONE at 19:15
