Newport students showcase their performing arts skills

Students from a Newport secondary school took part in a spectacular performance to showcase their performing arts skills.

The event took place at Burton Borough School where head of drama Danny Williams was master of ceremonies for the evening.

It began with a powerful performance by the school band led by head of music Alison Ruston which set the stage for the whole show.

Mrs Ruston said: “The Easter showcase was a fantastic opportunity for our students – especially our GCSE Music students – to perform their practical exam pieces in front of a live audience. The evening was filled with passion, talent, and community spirit, and I couldn’t be prouder of all the students who performed.”

The showcase included performances from the Elite Dance Group, who performed two impressive routines showing their acrobatic tricks and performance skills. This is a new area of the school curriculum, which has been developed by dance teacher Lia Lyttle.

The seven members of KS3 Dance Club delivered a street dance routine, and Year 9 students performed a contemporary dance routine they had prepared in their PE lessons.

Students from the drama department gave three performances – Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, and The Day the Internet Died.

Dance teacher Miss Lyttle said: “It was amazing to see the students showcase their dance routines after months of lessons and rehearsals. They put so much effort into learning the routines, and I’m incredibly proud of how they represented themselves in the showcase.”

Also on the evening, GCSE music students recorded their practical exam pieces live in front of an audience and the school choir performed ‘Symphony’ and ‘Price Tag’.

Burton Borough School principal Caroline Bedford said: “The showcase was a true reflection of our school’s values of ambition, pride, and care. I am incredibly proud of all our students for their dedication and hard work, as well as the staff who support them every day to make such achievements possible.”
