Live Action: Lilo & Stitch

Lilo & Stitch is the latest Disney live-action remake, based on the animated movie from 2002.

Okay, here’s the thing.

While sometimes remaking a film can offer room for plenty of story we may not have known before – take the case of 2017’s Beauty and the Beast. In that film, we learned it was the plague that killed Belle’s mum, and Gaston was a much better villain and threat in the remake.

Some remakes are made just to cash in on nostalgia and success, like 2019’s The Lion King. It was a shot-for-shot remake and yet… it was just so dull to look at. The trouble was that the visuals were so realistic it felt more like a Life on Earth episode rather than a Hollywood movie.

But back to Lilo & Stitch. What did I think of the original? I think it’s fine, nothing special, a bit overrated in my opinion, and certainly over-merchandised in the shops. I mean, you can’t move for Stitch merchandise! But it’s a fine enough film that’s harmless and does have its moments that made me chuckle.

But on to the remake…

I did think the visuals were nice, but that’s as much praise as I can give it. This is an unnecessary and bad remake of a passable film.

I never saw the hype in Lilo & Stitch. I always found Lilo to be a brat and Stitch to be a creepy, destructive, annoying alien.

This movie was boring, made no sense to me, and one of the character designs, Jumba Jookiba, has a really off-putting design for his nose that can be misinterpreted as it looks quite, um… wrong.

I cannot give this movie any more than one and a half stars, and that’s me being generous.

To put it bluntly, take the kids to see A Minecraft Movie instead; they will enjoy it a lot more.
