18hr Challenge for Pave Aways team

From before the sun rises over Telford this morning, until it goes dark, teams from local construction company Pave Aways will be lacing up their boots to kick off an 18-hour relay challenge to raise funds for Lingen Davies Cancer Support, a charity currently supporting one of their own through treatment.

The Wrekin Relay will see the team walk from 4am to 10pm, climbing the landmark hill in a continuous baton-style relay. It’s all to support Lingen Davies’ newly launched Sunflower Appeal, a £5 million campaign to grow and improve cancer care across Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, and Mid Wales.

Funds will go towards building a new Chemotherapy Centre at Princess Royal Hospital in Telford, set to open by 2029. Alongside the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital’s existing services, the new facility will double capacity and bring life-saving treatment closer to home for thousands.

“Lingen Davies plays an essential role in supporting people across our region during some of the most difficult moments in their lives,” said Steven Owen, Managing Director of Pave Aways and winner of this year’s Shropshire Chamber John Clayton Award.

“The charity’s work means a great deal to us – one of our team is currently receiving care through them. The Wrekin is right on our doorstep, so it felt like the perfect place to take on this year’s challenge.”

There’s a prize in store for supporters too – anyone who donates via the team’s JustGiving page will be entered into a free prize draw to win a DeWalt Hammer Drill worth over £200. Full entry details are available on the JustGiving fundraiser page.

With strong roots in Wellington and Telford, the company is encouraging locals to come along and cheer the team on. They’ll be selling refreshments in the Wrekin car park throughout the day to help boost their total. (Please note: the car park is pay and display.)
