New Pioneer Scholarships for local students

A new scholarship scheme from Harper Adams University, aimed at supporting local students from Telford and Market Drayton to access higher education.

The Vice-Chancellors Pioneers Scholarships are available to students applying to study a digital focused degree course at the Quad in Telford.

The scholarships are open to applicants living in postcodes TF1, TF2, TF3, TF4, TF7 and TF9, areas identified as having lower levels of progression to universities.

Each scholarship includes:

• A £500 start-up grant to help with essential course-related costs

• A £3,000 bursary, which can be used to reduce the fee in year one or spread across the duration of the degree

The scholarships scheme is being funded by the University and its Development Trust to support students who may face financial barriers to further study.

Councillor Shirley Reynolds, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People, Education, Employment and Skills said:

“This is a fantastic opportunity for local students who might not otherwise consider university. By removing some of the financial pressure, these scholarships can help more young people take that next step and realise their potential. We are proud to support Harper Adams University in this initiative.”

Vice-Chancellor Professor Ken Sloan said: “We have said before that we are here for the region’s learners.

“This announcement is just the latest proof of that – offering tangible support to students who want to come and study with us.

“We hope that these scholarships will both encourage students to look at some of the fantastic new digitally-focused courses right on their doorsteps at Harper Adams University, Telford.

“One of the drivers behind this new development was boosting high-end skills and industry-focused research in the region to support regeneration and economic growth.

“The region has attracted 200 foreign-owned businesses from 25 countries in industries from automotive to digital and creative; and from business services and logistics to food production and agri-tech – so there’s a clear demand for these skills.

“Couple that with our award-winning career prospects and enviable graduate employment record – we are second among universities in the UK for the proportion of graduates in full time employment, and second in the UK for those in either full-time employment or further study – and we really do have something to offer prospective students locally.”

The scholarships are open now for students starting their course in September 2025
