‘Cash for Crash’ scam in Telford – here are two things you can do
Reports of ‘Cash for Crash’ criminals operating in Telford and Newport have been identified by police, but it’s not just a local problem. Across the UK, over 4,000 people have been targeted between 2021 and 2024.
It works like this: A car in front of you will stop suddenly, in some cases, brake lights may have been disconnected, causing you to collide with the vehicle. The occupants of the car will make fake insurance claims for injuries that have not been caused, or even demand cash by intimidating you at the roadside to settle a claim.
How to spot a potential scammer:
‘Crash for cash’ fraudsters overreact and fake injuries after crashes.
Cars often ‘hang around’ an area looking for a victim
How to help yourself and others
Be cautious when on the road approaching junctions and roundabouts.
Leave a decent gap between you and the car in front.
Fit a dashcam to the front and rear of your vehicle.
If you see a suspicious crash, offer to be a witness to the driver.
