Town Park amphitheatre revival

It’s rotting and fenced off to the public at the moment, but Telford & Wrekin Council is moving forward with plans to revitalise the Telford Town Park Amphitheatre, transforming it into a cutting-edge outdoor performance space.

The Council’s first Cultural Strategy for the borough, approved by the Cabinet on 17th July, includes a crucial funding bid aimed at bringing the venue back to its former glory.

Once a lively hub for live music, drama, dance, and classical performances, the 400-seater amphitheatre, set against the picturesque Randlay Pool in the award-winning Telford Town Park, is set for a major refurbishment. Telford & Wrekin Council is committing its own funds and actively seeking additional grants to complete the project.

Councillor Angela McClements, Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure, Tourism, Culture & the Arts, expressed her enthusiasm: “We know that the Town Park Amphitheatre was well loved by many people who attended music gigs and events there. This is a really exciting development and we are looking forward to seeing the redevelopment and the range of outdoor performances that can be hosted there. This project will be bringing cultural activity to the doorstep of many of our residents. We are excited about the potential of this project to not only restore a beloved venue but also to create a dynamic cultural landmark that will benefit the community for years to come.”

The project aims to revitalise the local arts scene by providing a dedicated space for performances, fostering local talent, and bringing diverse cultural experiences to Telford. It also seeks to enhance community engagement, boost tourism, promote sustainability, and offer educational opportunities. The new outdoor performance space is also expected to encourage residents to spend more time in the borough’s parks and green spaces, improving health and well-being.
