Would you like to see the Iron Bridge on a banknote?
Telford & Wrekin Council is urging residents to back a national consultation that could see the iconic Iron Bridge featured on a new Bank of England banknote. The call comes as the Bank seeks public opinion on themes for its next series of notes, set for release in 2026.
Telford & Wrekin Council is championing the “Architecture and Landmarks” theme, highlighting the world’s first cast-iron bridge as a symbol of British innovation and a globally significant landmark. Its inclusion would mark a major celebration for the region.
Councillor Angela McClements, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Tourism, Culture & the Arts, said: “Featuring one of Britain’s iconic landmarks, like the Iron Bridge, on a Bank of England banknote would be more than national recognition; it would celebrate our region with the world.
“The Iron Bridge is one of Telford’s and also the UK’s most powerful symbols. It revolutionised engineering and inspired future bridge design. Its construction techniques were pioneering, using carpentry-style joints adapted for iron.”
Councillor Carolyn Healy, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, Planning & Sustainability, added: “We’re calling on everyone – schools, history groups, residents, and proud locals – to take part. Your voice matters. Let’s champion Architecture and Landmarks and show the Bank of England what the Iron Bridge means to all of us.”
The consultation is open until 11:59pm on 31 July 2025. Members of the public can participate by visiting the Bank of England’s consultation page, selecting ‘Architecture and Landmarks’ as a preferred theme, and sharing a brief reason for their choice. This initiative offers a chance to influence the design of future banknotes and champion Britain’s architectural legacy.
