Orange button scheme launches in Telford
Telford and Wrekin Council is launching a new initiative to help those struggling with their mental health. The Orange Button scheme will train people to offer a listening ear and signpost individuals to professional help.
The initiative, which is a national scheme now being implemented locally, will coincide with the build-up to World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September. A further council event is planned for 13 September. The Orange Button scheme aims to create a network of support throughout the community.
Those wearing an orange button have had training in suicide awareness. While they are not a replacement for professional counselling, they can provide a safe space for people to talk without judgement and can direct them to relevant services.
Councillor Kelly Middleton, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Healthier Communities, said: “The Orange Button scheme is a vital step forward in our commitment to supporting mental health within our community.
“By training individuals to recognise and respond to signs of distress, we are creating a network of empathy and support. We urge individuals and local businesses to step forward and be a beacon of hope for those in need.”
The council is inviting people and businesses to join the initiative. For more information on how to get an Orange Button, visit telford.gov.uk/orangebutton.
