Sweet anticipation from market traders

Wellington Market is on the cusp of a major transformation, with main refurbishment works set to begin soon. After a series of preparatory tasks, traders are showing real excitement for the project, which they believe will secure the future of the market for decades to come.

Telford & Wrekin Council successfully secured government funding for the investment. The scheme aims to revitalise the market, improving the look and feel of the historic building while safeguarding it for the next 50 years. The council is investing in the structure of the buildings, which have been neglected in the past.

Sweets Galore, a family business that has been at the market for 50 years, is particularly optimistic. Owners John and Diane Brown said: “ “There’s always an element of risk with change but we are really grateful to have a future and realise that if the refurbishment of the market isn’t done there won’t be a future – the market will die.

“We’ve been here for 50 years but our new gondola style stall will be one of those at the front and centre of the market and will hopefully draw people in to see what we and all the other traders in the market have to offer.

“The market is a very important part of the community in Wellington and we’re pleased that the historic features of the building, which has stood here for centuries, are being maintained.

“From a customer and trader perspective the new-look market will provide a much more welcoming and comfortable environment to work and shop in so we can’t wait to see it all completed.

“Businesses here are continuing to trade during the works so we’d encourage people to come and visit the market as usual and support the traders as we look forward to a new beginning and exciting times ahead.”

The refurbishment plans will maintain the market’s historic features, which date back to the 12th century. The new layout will improve accessibility and circulation, and the toilet facilities will also be refurbished and expanded. There will be an improved covered outdoor space for events and a better food court to attract more visitors.

Traders will continue to operate during the works. The council is supporting those affected by offering a rent-free period while they are temporarily moved and a 50% rental concession for the first six months in their permanent locations. Visitors are encouraged to continue supporting the businesses during this period of change.
