Telford Hosts Record Pickleball Event
The sport of pickleball is set to take over the Telford International Centre next week, as the town prepares to host the English Open.
With a record-breaking 2,300 players from over 40 countries, it will be the largest pickleball event outside of North America.
The Elite Island Resorts English Open, running from August 6th to 10th, reflects the sport’s rapid rise in popularity.
Players aged between 7 and 70+ will compete in various categories, including singles, doubles, mixed, wheelchair, and junior events.
Karen Mitchell, Chair and Co-Founding Director of Pickleball England, expressed her excitement for the tournament. “We are thrilled to have a record number of players,” she said.
“The Telford International Centre is a great venue to host an event of this scale, and we can’t wait to showcase the best of our sport.”
Pickleball, a blend of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, has seen significant growth due to its accessibility and ease of learning.
With over 50,000 active players and 800 places to play across the UK, its appeal continues to widen.
This year’s event also features a holiday theme, courtesy of title sponsor Elite Island Resorts, complete with a steel band and tiki bar for those attending.
