The regions top speeding spots revealed – Telford has three of them

West Mercia Police issued more than 140,000 Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) for speeding in just one year, according to new data.

Legal Expert learned that the force told 141,674 drivers that they had broken the speed limit in the year ending March 2025.

The fixed penalty for speeding is £100. That means that a whopping £14,167,400 worth of potential penalties were racked up over 12 months.

With just shy of 30,000 FPNs between them, sections of the M5 take up the top three spots in the list of ‘worst’ roads for speeding offences.

Drivers breaking the limit going southbound at Junction 8 received 10,040 FPNs. On average, that’s more than one offender caught every hour.

The stretch of the M5 going southbound from Junction 4a to Junction 6 is where 9,718 people ended up getting hit with a fixed penalty.

And not far behind them were drivers going the other way. They received 9,568 FPNs in total.

Roads all around the West Mercia region feature in the top 20, including passages in and around Telford, Worcester, Shrewsbury, Hereford and Kidderminster.

The EP features heavily in the list, with 6177 fines issued at Trench Lock, and 2300 just a few metres further on. West Centre Way near the shopping centre is the other road, with 3729 fines issued in the year to March.

The force also revealed the five worst speeding offenders in the region. Top of the list was a driver who, in February this year, hit 115mph on the M5 heading north. That’s well above twice the 50mph speed limit in place between Junctions 6 and 4a.

One driver travelled at 112mph on the EP, the main road which passes straight through Telford in August last year.
