Academy expands with new science block
A new science centre at Ercall Wood Academy marks a major milestone in the school’s expansion. The three-storey building, which has nine labs and a new behaviour unit, has now been handed over to the school in Telford.
The new spaces have been designed to support all science and technology learning and will help the school grow its pupil numbers by a third. The academy will eventually have capacity for 1,200 students, up from 900.
The expansion, supported by Telford & Wrekin Council, also includes a single-storey extended dining room. Outside, work has seen the resurfacing of the Multi-Use Games Area with new LED floodlights.
Nick Murphy, Ercall Wood Academy Headteacher, said: “This is a high-quality environment which will facilitate amazing learning experiences for our students, and I am really excited to open our doors.”
Councillor Shirley Reynolds, from Telford & Wrekin Council, said: “The expansion of the school will cater for the demand from people living locally and support the school’s continued growth.”
Ercall Wood Academy dates back to the 1940s and was rebuilt in 2014 on the same site as the existing school as part of the Building Schools for the Future scheme. The school’s previous science rooms are being refurbished to become classrooms for ICT, art and music.
