Dalian Atkinson Legacy Fund Medal challenge launched
Telford families and businesses are being asked to take part in a challenge to honour local football icon Dalian Atkinson. The Shropshire Community Foundation and the Aston Villa Foundation are working together to launch the Dalian Atkinson Legacy Fund Medal Challenge.
The campaign is centred around the number 10, which Atkinson wore during his time at Aston Villa. Participants can take on their own physical challenge, such as running, cycling, or swimming 10 miles. The initiative is a tribute to the player who grew up in the town and made a name for himself as a striker for clubs including Aston Villa and Sheffield Wednesday.
The money raised will go to the Dalian Atkinson Legacy Fund, which supports causes important to him, including youth empowerment, mental health initiatives, and access to sport for underrepresented groups. The challenge runs until 28 October 2025. A minimum £30 donation will get participants a commemorative medal.
Sonia Roberts, a Trustee of the Shropshire Community Foundation, said: “This campaign is about more than honouring a footballer, it’s about celebrating Dalian’s achievements and ensuring his legacy continues to provide opportunities for others.”
The campaign will end with a special event later this year where Dalian’s brother, Paul Atkinson, will be presented with a cheque from the Aston Villa Foundation. Those who raise over £500 will be invited to the event.
