New SEND hub nears completion

A specialist hub for children with special educational needs is nearing completion at Millbrook Primary School.

The new space, built by construction firm Pave Aways, was finished over the summer break and will welcome its first pupils in the new year.

The new hub will provide tailored support for children with special educational needs within a mainstream school environment. It will be run by staff from Haughton School, who will lend their expertise to the project.

Lisa Williams, Headteacher at the Haughton School, said: “We are looking forward to the opening of the hub and working in partnership with Millbrook Primary School and Nursery to provide specialist support for the pupils who attend.

“The hubs we support in other local mainstream schools have been extremely successful in supporting children to access mainstream classes and we are look forward to providing this provision at Millbrook, enabling more children to successfully access provision at a mainstream school.”

Construction is also moving ahead on two new classrooms, a new school hall, and improved kitchen facilities as part of the wider renovation. The project is being funded through a developer contribution from a housing development on the former Maxell Europe site.

Councillor Shirley Reynolds, Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet Member for Children, Young People, Education, Employment and Skills, said the new facility will offer ‘dedicated support for children with special educational needs in an environment specifically designed to meet their individual requirements.’

The council has committed to a further £45.2 million investment to support and develop its school expansion programme in the 2025/26 budget.
