New Wolves football course is off to a ‘fantastic’ start

Telford College’s new football course in partnership with Wolves Foundation has got off to a fantastic start.

The ‘Football and Education’ programme, which has been relaunched this year, gives students the chance to obtain a sports qualification alongside a series of enrichment opportunities with the Premier League club.

This year’s squad has already visited Molineux stadium for a behind-the-scenes tour, met some of the club’s key officials, and seen the Wolves under 21 team take on their counterparts from Spanish giants Real Madrid.

The Telford College students also get chance to wear the famous old gold colours and represent Wolves Foundation in fixtures against other professional club foundation teams in the ECFL league.

They are currently top of the table after kicking off the season with a thumping 9-0 victory over Mansfield.

In the classroom, meanwhile, they have been studying anatomy and physiology in the college’s science labs, and begun writing fitness training programmes to feed into their qualification.

Guest lectures are also part of the course, and students have already met the Wolves under 18 squad’s strength and conditioning coach Fraser Russell, who gave a detailed talk on his journey into the game and current role with Wolves Academy.

Melanie Newbrook, learner manager for sport and public uniformed services at Telford College, said: “It’s been a really busy few weeks for the Wolves students, both on and off the field.

“They have access to our player data GPS and Veo cameras – which is used in top-level sport around the world – to analyse their performances.

“As well as their course content and football activities, the link-up with Wolverhampton Wanderers provides a series of exciting enrichment opportunities. The students really enjoyed their official ‘signing on’ session and photoshoot at the stadium.”

Teddy Munroe, student development officer at Wolves Foundation, added: “The students have made a fantastic start to life on the programme. The quality of training sessions has been brilliant, resulting in some excellent pre-season results and a good start in the league.

“It was lovely to see the students’ reaction to visiting Molineux, and a great insight for them to see a game between two top academies – I’m sure we are all in for an exciting season.”

Students have access to some of the best facilities in the area at Telford College. These include a double sized sports hall, an indoor 3G football pitch, an outdoor 3G all-weather pitch, professional studio and well-stocked gym.

Andy Turner, the college’s director of vocational studies, said: “It has been a fantastic start to the new academic year for our sports students, and it is great to see the football and education college academy with Wolves Foundation come to life.

“The students are in for an incredible two years on the programme and we’re excited to see them take full advantage of the opportunities that arise as a result of studying with us.”
