Next phase for Wellington Market begins
The market remains open for business as the contractors start on the next phase.
Work to transform Wellington Market is now well underway, with the project set to secure its future for the next 50 years. The main internal and external works can now begin following the completion of enabling works by local contractor Pave Aways Ltd.
The council has ensured that the market’s traders can remain open for business throughout the renovation, even if they have to be temporarily relocated. Some traders have already moved into temporary stalls within the market, with one business already in its permanent new location.
Final plans were agreed after one-to-one meetings with individual business owners and engagement sessions with traders, whose feedback has helped to shape the final design. Hoarding and fencing are now being put up to secure the work areas and new signage will be installed to guide customers.
The council has secured government funding for the project, which will improve the building’s infrastructure and the market’s overall appearance and function. The plans will retain the market’s original historic features while also enhancing accessibility and improving the flow of people through the space.
Additional improvements include refurbished and expanded toilet facilities, a new covered outdoor space for events and a food court. The refurbishment aims to retain and improve the market as a retail, food and leisure hub.
The council is supporting traders by providing a rent-free period for the duration of any temporary relocation. Traders will also receive a 50% rental concession up until their move, and another 50% concession for the first six months in their permanent spot.
Councillor Ollie Vickers, Cabinet Member for the Economy and Transport, said the council had worked closely with traders and were pleased to see the main works begin.
“We will continue to work closely with traders during the refurbishment and encourage people to continue to use the market and support our traders as the market will be open as usual throughout the works,” he said.
“It’s essential that we carry out this refurbishment to safeguard the market for generations to come, improving facilities immensely whilst retaining the market’s historic original features.
“These are exciting times for Wellington Market and we can’t wait to see a revitalised market which people can be proud of and a place in the heart of the community where they can come to shop, eat and socialise.”
The council’s Pride in Our High Street programme will also continue to provide support to traders and businesses in the area.
