Sports club gets go ahead for padel courts

A sports club in St Georges has been granted planning permission to install two padel courts, creating a new hub for the fast-growing sport. The approval was issued by Telford & Wrekin Council on 22 September 2025.

The new courts at St Georges Sports And Social Club will be located on Church Street and will include associated fencing and lighting. Operators said they are planning to build “state-of-the-art outdoor padel courts” at St Georges Recreation Ground in Telford, creating a destination for both players and spectators. The club’s application, referenced as TWC/2025/0508, stated there is an “increasing local demand” for the game.

The new facility is planned to include a dedicated social area and seating. The club says the courts will be used for regular tournaments, coaching for all ages, and social events.

The recreation ground has a long history of providing leisure and sporting opportunities for the community, having been a home for cricket, hockey, and bowling for over 100 years. Operators, Cheshire Padel, say they are confident the addition of padel will allow the ground to continue to thrive and offer something new for the local area.

The approval comes with specific conditions, including limiting the hours of use. The club must also submit an environmental management and lighting plan to minimise disruption to residents and wildlife.
