A credit to the college: Warm praise for T-Level student Tyler

T-Level student Tyler Floyd-Morgan has made a big impression during his work placement with Telford-based automated technology specialist, iconsys.

The 17-year-old is in the second year of a digital T-Level course with Telford College, which has so far included nine weeks of work placement at the award-winning company’s base at Stafford Park.

The iconsys team has described him as ‘a credit to the college’, and Tyler says he has loved being part of a top-level IT team working on real-world projects, and improving both his technical and inter-personal skills.

“I chose a T-Level because I prefer hands-on learning,” he said. “I find it gives me a much better understanding of what I’m supposed to be doing.

“I’ve enjoyed it a lot, and have got so much out of my work placements which have given me chance to apply the technical skills I learn at college.”

Tyler has been involved in a broad range of projects at iconsys, including assisting with the development of a recruitment app, setting up and administering hardware for users, and contributing to improvements of the company’s stock-booking system.

Sean Rendell, IT developer at iconsys, said: “Tyler always wants to do more, and picks things up really quickly. He knows exactly what to do next, and has been a pleasure to have with us. He’s been great to work with.”

Tyler added: “I’ve enjoyed being treated much more like an adult at college, rather than a student, and have loved working with my peers who have helped me a lot. It’s been great to be feel part of the iconsys team too.”

So what’s next? “My main goal is to get into games development if I can, or possibly work as an IT technician for a company. But I’ve seen some of the great things the engineers do at iconsys, so I’ve not ruled out a move into engineering either.”

Milissa Chesters, head of people and culture at iconsys who was involved in the matching process which led to Tyler’s placement, said: “We are looking for people who are hungry to learn, and who will be a ‘team iconsys’ player during the time they are with us.

“Tyler was exceptional from the start. I’ve seen him grow over the course of his two work placements with us. His work ethic is excellent, and he’s a real team player who has shown great enthusiasm for learning.

“He has been able to develop a lot of his soft skills alongside his IT skills, with a clear focus on building confidence and developing well-rounded business acumen. He is an absolute credit to Telford College and we know he will do well in the future.”

She added: “The partnership with Telford College and its T-Level students is working really well from our perspective, and we are committed to taking on more.

“Our first engineering T-Level student has arrived this month, and will be back at the college on October 20 for another matching session to hopefully bring in another digital student too.”
