Shop thieves jailed after breaking court orders

Three repeat shoplifters have been sent to prison after they broke court orders designed to curb their persistent anti-social behaviour. All three were convicted at Telford Magistrates Court today (Monday, October 20) in relation to separate incidents across the town.

Jason Martin, 38, of no fixed abode, was sentenced to three weeks in custody. He had breached a two-year Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) he received in March, along with being convicted of four counts of theft from a store and one count of criminal damage.

Another man, Neil Candlin, 32, also of no fixed abode, received a 14-week sentence. He was jailed for breaching his five-year CBO, which was given to him in July, as well as four counts of theft from a store.

Finally, Matthew Howes, 37, of no fixed abode, was handed a three-week sentence. His custodial sentence was for breaching a five-year CBO, which he received in June, and for six counts of theft from a store.

A CBO is a civil order intended to tackle the most serious and persistent anti-social individuals. The order can be issued when a person’s behaviour has been found to cause alarm, distress, or harassment.
