Telford student swims 21 miles for Cancer Research UK
Year 13 student Joe Costello, who is also Head Boy at Haberdashers Abraham Darby in Telford, is taking on a unique and demanding swimming challenge this November. He aims to swim the equivalent distance of the English Channel’s width to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
The challenge will see Joe swim 21 miles, starting on 1 November and finishing by the end of the month.
This means completing 33,000 metres, or 1,300 lengths of a 25-metre swimming pool, over 30 days. Most people attempt this distance in two months, but Joe has decided to push himself to complete it in just one.
Joe’s motivation is deeply personal, supporting people currently living with cancer, celebrating those who have battled through, and honouring those who have been lost.
He explained: “This is a charity very close to my heart with it affecting many people close to me such as friends, family and teachers.”
Joe has already set up a fundraising page and has raised £650 towards his £1,000 goal.
He hopes the local community will get behind him as he aims to make this a supportive community event and support as many people as he can.
