Flood defences going up at Ironbridge

Flood barriers are now being deployed in Ironbridge as the Environment Agency predicts the River Severn will peak shortly.

The Wharfage is closed to vehicles in preparation for the expected peak on Monday afternoon, which could see river levels rise to between 5.0m and 5.6m.

The Environment Agency has confirmed that a ‘flooding is possible’ alert remains in place for the area.

Crews are erecting the temporary flood barriers today, Sunday, November 16, and sandbags will be made available for residents and businesses.

Sandbags will be available to collect from several locations, including Lloyds Head, Wharfage Car Park, Ironbridge Central Car Park, Bower Yard, and Ferry Road.

While the main road through the area is closed to traffic, pedestrian access to businesses is being maintained with diversions in place. Officials are encouraging visitors to use Ironbridge Central Car Park.

The museums and businesses, including the Coalbrookdale Museums, Greenwood Centre, Maws Craft Centre, and the Wharfage shops, are remaining open and appreciate the public’s continued support during this period of disruption.
