New SpongeBob movie is a letdown for me
Jason Wright went to see the latest Spongebob film and has this suggestion for you…
I headed down to Southwater in Telford this weekend to see if the yellow sponge still has it. The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants tries to bring back the charm of my childhood, but it really didn’t land for me.
I grew up with this character, voiced as always by Tom Kenny alongside Bill Fagerbakke. For me, the first movie from 2004 with David Hasselhoff “is still easily the best the franchise has done.”
Compared to that, this new one directed by Derek Drymon felt like a disappointment. A major issue for me was the animation style.
I found the CGI “genuinely off-putting” and felt it lacked the soul of the original 2D drawings. It just didn’t suit the characters at all.
The humour did not hit the mark for an older audience and the story was predictable. Then there was the music.
The track Big Guy by Ice Spice was so annoying it nearly had me walking out of the cinema. It completely pulled me out of the movie.
The film is expected to make about £40 million globally this weekend. If you have kids who are fans, they will probably get some enjoyment out of it.
If you are an older fan, I would suggest skipping this one. I think you would be better off choosing Zootropolis 2 instead.
