Shops face action after selling vapes to teen
Trading Standards officers caught two retailers selling vapes to a 16-year-old during a sting operation on Telford high streets this week. The undercover exercise used a teenage volunteer to check if local businesses were following the law regarding age-restricted products.
Telford & Wrekin Council confirmed that while most shops passed the test, two premises failed to ask for identification. These businesses are now under investigation and could face enforcement action as part of the council’s Winter of Action campaign.
The operation showed an 80 per cent compliance rate across the borough, with the majority of staff refusing the sale and asking for proof of age. It is illegal to sell alcohol or vaping products to anyone under the age of 18.
Councillor Richard Overton, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Enforcement, said: “The majority of businesses in Telford acted responsibly during this operation and complied with legislation governing age-restricted sales. Our teams work hard to support and educate retailers about their legal obligations and to safeguard young people.”
The council is urging all retailers to stick to the Challenge 25 policy. This requires staff to check for photographic ID from anyone who looks under 25 years old.
“While we are pleased that most premises refused to sell to the volunteer, it is always disappointing when a retailer fails to uphold the law. We are taking appropriate action in such cases,” added Councillor Overton.
Retailers who break the law face prosecution and heavy fines. Those selling alcohol also risk losing their licence to trade.
Residents who want to report the sale of vapes or alcohol to minors can contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 0808 223 1133.
