Telford dog rehoming centre appeals for support to improve ageing facilities

A Telford dog rehoming centre is calling on the community to help raise £50,000 towards essential improvements to some of its ageing facilities.

Hilbrae Dog Rehoming Centre has launched its Build a Better Bark appeal to fund the replacement of outdated kennel blocks and re-fence its exercise paddock, saying the work is vital to ensure dogs arriving at the centre who have lost everything have the facilities that they need whilst they wait for their second chance.

The registered charity has been caring for stray and unwanted dogs across Shropshire for more than 36 years and has taken in over 21,000 stray dogs from Telford alone. However, it only receives council funding for only the first seven days of a stray dog’s care, after that every kennel, every meal and vet care is funded entirely by donations.

Jo Wrate, who is supporting the appeal on behalf of Hilbrae, said early donations had been encouraging but stressed that much more support was needed.

“We’ve been really heartened by the kindness shown so far,” she said. “These improvements are about keeping our facilities safe and fit for purpose. Whether people are able to donate money via the Justgiving linkr, perhaps offer materials, or give their time and skills, every contribution helps us move closer to our goal.”

The appeal has gained attention following recent coverage on BBC Radio Shropshire, and the charity hopes this will encourage more residents and local businesses to get involved. The charity are appealing to local businesses to sponsor Hilbrae in return for coverage.

Hilbrae says the planned work will improve safety, create better shelter and enhance outdoor space for dogs recovering from neglect or abandonment, giving them the best possible chance before being rehomed.
