Homes for veterans scheme launched in Telford

The housing scheme will see the Council purchase 10 properties, as part of its Telford & Wrekin Homes programme, which will be prioritised for veterans. The Council would then look to expand the scheme in future phases.

This will build on the Council’s ongoing support and commitment to those who are serving or have served in the forces, with existing initiatives already going beyond the expectations of the Armed Forces Act 2021.

Through the Armed Forces Covenant in the last year alone, the Council has expanded its outreach programme for armed forces personnel, with community events and the official opening of the Christopher Turley Armed Forces Hub.

Councillor Lee Carter, Leader of Telford & Wrekin Council, said: “As an authority that protects, cares and invests for the benefit of local people, our proposal to provide dedicated housing for veterans is another important step in our commitment to supporting those who have served in the armed forces.

“The new homes will be purchased as part of our Telford & Wrekin Homes offer and will be allocated to veterans, giving them priority access to high‑quality, secure housing.

“In our budget proposals for the year ahead, the Council has also confirmed its support for the Royal British Legion’s Credit Their Service campaign and set out plans to strengthen current arrangements so that military compensation does not affect means tested benefit assessments.

“Together these initiatives represent a meaningful investment by the Council as part of our upcoming budget and will provide long‑term benefits for those who have served our country.”
