Wellington Post Office closure confirmed for February
The Post Office branch in Market Street is set to close its doors in just over two weeks, leaving residents to travel further for services. A spokesperson for the Post Office confirmed the branch will shut on 16 February at 5.30pm following the resignation of the current operator.
The site has been run by a temporary operator for some time. While the vacancy is being advertised to find a permanent solution, the Post Office is looking to relocate as part of the wider regeneration of Wellington.
A Post Office spokesperson said: “We can confirm the closure of Wellington branch on 16 February at 5.30pm due to the resignation of the operator. The vacancy is advertised on www.runapostoffice.co.uk
“Wellington Post Office has been run by a temporary operator for a while and we are looking for a permanent solution. We are working closely with the council to relocate the Post Office as part of the regeneration of Wellington. A new operator would be required.
“We are looking to restore service to the area as soon as possible. In the interim alternative branches include Brooklands, which is 0.73 miles away, Arleston, which is 1.05 miles away and Admaston and Leegomery, both under two miles away.”
Wellington Town Council has stepped in to reassure the public that plans for a new site are already in motion. The council recently purchased the former Halifax building on Duke Street with the specific intention of turning it into a new home for the post office.
Councillor Paul Davis, chair of policy and resources at Wellington Town Council, said: “It has been a long-term strategic aim, as part of the ongoing regeneration of Wellington town centre, to ensure that residents have access to a Post Office that meets the needs of our town, its residents and businesses.
“The Duke Street property, formerly the Halifax building society, was purchased by Wellington Town Council specifically to create a new home for the Post Office, and we continue to work closely with the Post Office to achieve that aim.”
