High Sheriff calls for more magistrates to tackle court backlogs
Shropshire is facing a critical shortage of magistrates. The High Sheriff of Shropshire has issued an urgent appeal for local people to step forward.
Court delays are currently at an “unacceptable” level. To combat this, the powers of magistrates are being extended. They will soon handle a broader range of cases to ease pressure on higher courts.
You do not need legal qualifications to join the bench. Full training is provided to all successful applicants.
To be eligible, you must be:
- Between the ages of 18 and 75.
- Of good character and sound judgement.
- Able to commit to at least five years of service.
Magistrates handle over 90% of criminal cases. This includes theft, traffic violations, and minor assaults. They also deal with civil matters such as family disputes.
The High Sheriff of Shropshire said: “The pressing issue of court delays and the significant role magistrates play in alleviating this challenge has heightened the critical need for more magistrates to step forward and contribute to expediting the delivery of justice.”
The role is voluntary. It brings a local perspective to the justice system. More volunteers mean cases can be processed faster, ensuring justice is not delayed for victims or the accused.
