Silver Swallow lift out of action

Telford Central Railway Station passengers are facing an accessibility crisis after the lift on Platform 2 up to the Silver Swallow bridge linking the Town Centre to the station was vandalised.

26/2/26 – 16:45 **UPDATE: THE LIFT IS FIXED**

Engineers have reportedly confirmed that a replacement part is required which could take weeks to arrive. Platform 2 has no ramp and is only accessible via stairs, meaning there is currently no step-free access for passengers.

The bridge and lifts at the station are owned and operated by Telford & Wrekin Council rather than Network Rail. Telford & Wrekin Council are arranging a taxi service for those who cannot use the stairs but concerns were raised for passengers travelling late at night.

Station staff finish work at 7pm and the station is unstaffed in the evenings. Reports suggest that if the on-call council manager does not answer the phone out of hours, passengers risk being stranded on the dark platform.

A Telford & Wrekin Council spokesperson said: “Sadly, the lift controls at Telford Central Station have been vandalised, meaning the lift is currently out of action whilst awaiting replacement parts and repair.

“This criminal damage has been reported to the police, and CCTV is being reviewed. In the meantime, rail staff are assisting during station opening hours, and outside these hours contact details are available for a free taxi service to take disabled passengers between platforms.

“We apologise for the inconvenience caused and are working to have the lift back in operation as soon as possible.”

Staff have taped the council’s contact details to the lift doors to help travellers in the meantime.
