A Wellington man has appeared before magistrates after a series of thefts from local retailers involving gift sets, food, and laundry products.

David Mooney, 56, of King Street and Victoria Mews, Wellington, was sentenced at Telford Magistrates’ Court on 25 February 2026. He faced multiple charges of theft and attempted theft spanning several months in 2025.

The court heard that Mooney targeted several well-known stores in the area:

  • Boots, Wellington: Mooney stole a ‘Soap and Glory’ gift box worth £54 on 6 August, followed by further gift sets valued at £40 on 10 October and £18 on 13 October.
  • B&M, Wellington: On 16 August, he stole food and laundry items with a total value of £180.
  • Home Bargains: On 18 July, Mooney took chocolate and laundry products worth £31.53. He later returned on 4 December in an attempt to steal gift sets valued at £21.96.

In addition to the shoplifting charges, Mooney was sentenced for failing to surrender to custody at Telford Magistrates’ Court on 10 November 2025, having previously been released on bail.

Magistrates took Mooney’s guilty pleas into account when passing a Community Order which will run until 24 February 2027.

As part of the order, Mooney must undergo non-residential drug rehabilitation for nine months and participate in up to 10 days of rehabilitation activities. He was also ordered to pay a £50 fine and a total of £323.53 in compensation to the affected stores.
