‘Superstar’ apprentice Jess is thriving at local primary school

An early years apprenticeship is proving to be the perfect stepping stone into a teaching career for Jess Decalmer.

The 20-year-old, from Ellerdine, has spent the past three years working as an apprentice teaching assistant at High Ercall Primary School – and says she is absolutely loving the experience.

With her level three apprenticeship now nearing completion, the former Charlton School student is preparing to progress onto a university-level teaching qualification, with the goal of becoming a fully-fledged primary school teacher.

“After leaving school I did a level two teaching assistant course – not because I had my heart set on teaching at that point, but as a bit of a sideline while I was getting my maths qualifications.

“But part of the course included a work placement, and I chose High Ercall Primary School. I realised as soon as I came here how much I loved it, and that this was going to be the career for me.”

Jess now spends much of her time supporting year three and four pupils with maths and English – and even found herself dressing as a rock star for a themed ‘rock star times tables’ day.

“I want to stay in primary education; I really love the friendly atmosphere, and not having to specialise in just one subject,” she said.

“I’m so glad I chose an apprenticeship. I enjoyed my time at Telford College, and the staff here at the school have been really good with me.

“This is a role that suits someone who is open to change, flexible, and empathetic towards children. It’s so important to understand what they are feeling, and how they see the world.”

Rebecca Mulready, early years and education assessor at Telford College, said: “Jess is an exemplary apprentice. She has not only shown a high level of dedication to her role in school but has also shown huge commitment to college sessions.

“Jess has embraced her apprenticeship with such a positive attitude and a smile and it has been a pleasure to support her.”

Amelia Millea, learning innovation manager at the college, added: “Jess was a superstar and a pleasure to teach. She came into every session with a smile on her face and willingness to learn.

“She had excellent relationships and manner with her fellow students, and always put in maximum effort. She was a credit to both her employer and the college.”

Telford College is hosting the next meeting of its Early Years Employer Skills Hub on March 18, where employers and educators come together and help shape the future workforce.

It is a chance to influence training so it reflects real industry needs, allowing educators to network with peers, share expertise, and build a pipeline of skilled, work-ready talent.
