Oakengates man jailed for shoplifting and assault
An Oakengates man has been handed a custodial sentence after appearing before Telford Magistrates’ Court following a series of incidents in St Georges.
Jordan Unwin, 35, of Stafford Road, Oakengates, appeared at the court on 17 March 2026 for a first hearing regarding charges of theft and common assault.
The court heard that on 15 March 2026, Unwin stole chocolates and yoghurts to the value of £16.25 from the Co-op on Stafford Street in St Georges. On the same date, he also carried out a common assault against a woman.
Unwin pleaded guilty to both offences, and these pleas were taken into account during sentencing.
Magistrates determined that the offences were so serious that only a custodial sentence could be justified, citing the nature and seriousness of the crimes alongside his previous record and character.
For the theft of the food items, he was sentenced to four weeks imprisonment.
A concurrent sentence of four weeks was also handed down for the assault, resulting in a total custodial period of four weeks.
No compensation was ordered for the theft as the goods were recovered and a prison sentence was being imposed.
