Telford apprentice swaps burger flipping for big building sites
A 24-year-old from Telford is proving that traditional stereotypes have no place in modern house building, having traded a role in fast food for a career inspecting major housing developments.
Madison Evans embarked on her journey into the construction industry two years ago. She is currently completing a Clerk of Works apprenticeship with Housing Plus Group, a role that sees her ensuring the quality and safety of new homes across Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin.
Before finding her footing in the sector, Madison worked as a shift manager at a well-known burger restaurant after finishing university. However, the pull of a practical, outdoor career proved stronger than the prospect of office life.
“I like being out on-site meeting lots of different people and gaining practical experience. I much prefer being active and getting outdoors, an office job isn’t for me,” Madison explained.
Initially joining the housing association as a Development Assistant to get her “foot in the door,” her ambition was quickly spotted, leading to her current apprenticeship. As a Clerk of Works, Madison is responsible for detailed inspections of materials and workmanship, ensuring every project complies with building regulations and specifications.
Her training involves shadowing experienced colleagues on-site and attending Shrewsbury College one day a week. By the end of her three-year programme, she will hold a Level 4 in Site Supervision.
Reflecting on her early projects, including two new bungalows in Riverside, Coalport, Madison said: “It was so exciting, it’s a really nice site, the location is absolutely amazing, and it’s been great to see the process through.”
She admitted to some early nerves when completing handovers by herself but noted the reward of seeing residents move in. “People are so grateful. They ask questions and you can see they’re getting excited to move into their new home. It’s great knowing that you’ve been part of that process for them.”
Madison’s manager, Senior Clerk of Works Alan Mason, praised her progress, noting she has received distinctions in all her assessments to date.
“Madison’s enthusiasm for the job is second to none,” he said. “Her ability to work with a variety of people in the industry, from the site management teams to the trades to resolve issues on site, is excellent and not to mention her way with our tenants when handing over new builds.”
As Women in Construction Week (1-7 March) highlights opportunities in the sector, Madison is encouraging others to ignore outdated perceptions of the industry.
“No one has ever batted an eye about me being a woman and I know most people view it as a very positive thing,” she said. “Don’t let traditional stereotypes hold you back if it’s something you’re interested in.”
