Animals – verdict on dead Newport swans

Following much online outrage after two swans were found dead on the canal in Newport, police have issued an update.

Telford & Wrekin Police said on Facebook “Earlier this week we issued an appeal for information, after nesting swans were killed on the tow path at Victoria Park, Newport.

“Following further enquiries, and advice from animal experts, we can confirm that the swans were killed by another animal and there is no criminal activity involved.

“We are grateful to everyone who brought this information to us, and to everyone who shared the appeal.”

While the swans perished, their eggs were collected by Cuan Wildlife Rescue and have subsequently hatched.

Police commented “…we hope the cygnets will continue to flourish.”
