Hundreds of children enjoy scouting activities

Pupils at Wombridge Primary School in Telford enjoyed a school day like no other as the 2nd Wombridge Scout Group returned for their fourth annual “school takeover” on Friday.

Over 300 children, aged 4 to 11, took part in a wide range of adventurous activities delivered by local Scout leaders. The classrooms were swapped for outdoor spaces as pupils experienced everything from pioneering and navigation to axe throwing, Archery and a “face your fear” challenge designed to build confidence and teamwork.

Scouting offers young people the chance to develop practical skills, build friendships, and grow in confidence through hands-on learning and adventure. Events like the school takeover give children a real taste of what Scouting is all about – trying new things, overcoming challenges, and discovering their potential in a fun, supportive environment. For many of the pupils, it’s their first step into the world of Scouting.

The day ended with a lively campfire, complete with songs, marshmallows, and one of the most anticipated moments – the slime challenge. Pupils who had “done their best” throughout the day were given the chance to nominate three teachers to be covered head to toe in slime!

Antony, Group Lead Volunteer said: “This was brilliant, seeing all these young people get so involved was amazing and most of them would never have the chance to try activities like this if it wasn’t for Scouting.”

Now in its fourth year, the school takeover is designed to showcase the fun and skills that Scouting can offer while promoting the benefits of getting outdoors. Last year’s highlights included crossbow shooting, archery, and building a giant bamboo pyramid taller than the teachers.

This year’s event proved just as popular, with laughter, challenge, and learning throughout the day. The 2nd Wombridge Scout Group said they look forward to continuing the tradition and inspiring even more young people next year.
