Firefighters tackle blaze near cemetery

Firefighters from across Shropshire tackled a wildfire that broke out in a Telford cemetery this afternoon.

Crews were mobilised to the grassland near Castle Green Cemetery on Lincoln Hill after a significant area of grass and gorse caught fire.

An eyewitness on Newcomen Way described the scene, stating, “They have the hoses out across the street up onto Rough Park, linking the fire engines together. It’s probably quite a hard spot to get access to.”

Appliances from Telford, Tweedale, Wellington, Much Wenlock, Bridgnorth, Newport and Shrewsbury were all in attendance, including the Incident Support Unit.

The firefighting efforts required a variety of equipment, with crews using beaters, breathing apparatus, and multiple hose reel and fogging units to extinguish the blaze.

A drone was also deployed to check for further spread as the fire tore through an area of grassland measuring 200m by 100m. The stop message was received at 2.14pm.
