Cancer Awareness Bus heads to Donnington

A new cancer support bus is coming to Telford and across the wider county, providing residents with an easy way to access information and health services. The mobile health bus, a partnership between NHS Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, the West Midlands Cancer Alliance and local health partners, will bring professionals directly into communities.

The tour, which begins this summer, offers on-the-spot education on how to check for signs of various cancers, including testicular, penile, and breast. It will also provide advice on accessing national cancer screening programmes and support for stopping smoking, gambling, and drug or alcohol use.

Guidance on managing long-term conditions like diabetes will be available, along with cost-of-living support from partners, including local authorities. The bus will visit several public locations from August through September, aiming to reach people in comfortable settings.

The first stop will be at Turreff Hall in Donnington on Tuesday 19th August, from 9am to 4pm.

Dr Katy Lewis, a clinical lead at NHS Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, explained that bringing cancer awareness directly into communities is a powerful way to reach those who might not otherwise use these services. “Early diagnosis saves lives, and this tour enables people to learn about symptoms, ask questions, and get support in a relaxed and approachable setting,” she said.

The initiative is part of an effort to reduce health inequalities and improve early cancer diagnosis rates across the region. No appointment is needed; residents are encouraged to simply drop in during a scheduled stop.
