Foundation programmes reach thousands

The AFC Telford United Foundation helped over 3,500 young people and families this summer. During its biggest-ever community impact programme, the charity provided free sports sessions and hot meals across Telford.

Running throughout August, the foundation’s series of holiday activities, summer camps, and a Holiday Hunger programme were based at the club’s SEAH Stadium in Wellington. Hundreds of children received a free hot meal, while 27 families were given support from the foundation’s food bank.

Urban Games football programmes were held across Telford every weekday, with weekly sessions also focused on disability, veterans, refugees, mental health, walking football, and fitness. A free Summer Digital Skills Club was also held by Cap Gemini at the SEAH Stadium.

Ian Preece, managing director of the foundation, said the summer has been “some of our most impactful.”

“With record participation, national recognition, and the continued growth of inclusive, community-led programmes, the Foundation is honoured to have made such a difference to people’s lives,” he said.

“The fact that we have helped young people and families access these programmes, in partnership with local companies, shows the remarkable strength of our community in Telford.”

Between July and August, a total of 3,431 participants across Telford & Wrekin were engaged, including 2,407 children and young people who took part in free football and holiday activities. 637 children received a hot meal through Holiday Hunger sessions, and 27 families were supported through the food bank. Delivery expanded to 17 different venues across the borough.

The summer sessions are part of the foundation’s year-round programme which also includes the annual Christmas Kindness toy and food banks.
