All change as Poundland estate shrinks further

A number of Poundland stores have already closed, with the Forge Retail Park store which closed in July is well on it’s way to becoming a Mountain Range outdoor store, but now another in Telford is set to check out later this month.

The Poundland store in Newport High Street is closing at the end of this month, leaving just one left in Telford, at the Shopping Centre.

On Tuesday next week, the website ordering will be turned off, and will effectively become an online catalogue.

From its origins in Burton upon Trent in 1990, the discount giant was floated on the London Stock Exchange in 2014 and hit £1b in sales just a year later.

In 2023 Poundland bought 71 stores from the failed Wilko chain, but in June 2025, struggling themselves, they were sold for £1 to Gordon Brothers.  Sounds like a bargain, but Gordon Brothers had to put £30m into the business to keep it running.

Just two months later after running out of cash, a restructuring plan was approved which saved the brand from entering into administration.

It was reported that the restructure will allow an extra £60m of cash to be injected into the business by Gordon Brothers, securing what’s left of the operation.

Gordon Brothers was founded in 1903 and has acquired, restructured (and on occasion liquidated) a number of international brands including Laura Ashley PLC, Polaroid and Borders.
