Free ride in a police car – who’s in?
The public can now join West Mercia Police officers on patrol as the ‘Ride Along’ scheme re-launches across the area, including Telford. The initiative offers residents a first-hand look at front-line policing and how officers tackle local issues.
Successful applicants will accompany an officer from a Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) for a shift to see what their day-to-day work involves. SNTs, which consist of police officers, PCSOs, special constables, and volunteers, focus on resolving concerns that matter most to local communities.
Chief Inspector Matt Sanders, who is heading up the scheme, said: “It is a fantastic opportunity for the residents of our three counties to have a real insight into how we police their towns and cities.”
He added that they hope the scheme will “strengthen relationships between police and the public and allow for one-to-one conversations while out on patrol in your area.”
Anyone over 18 who lives in Herefordshire, Shropshire, or Worcestershire is eligible to apply.
It is open to those considering a career in policing, those interested in how their local area is policed, or anyone who simply has an interest in the force’s work.
