Details released for Wellington lights switch on
Wellington is set for a bright Christmas as the Town Council has invested significantly in a new festive lighting scheme across the town. The new LED displays, which are intended to enhance civic pride, will be officially switched on by Mayor, Councillor Reg Snell, on Saturday, November 29.
The investment is the first major renewal and enhancement of the festive lights in over a decade. Crucially, it has allowed for the scheme to expand into new areas. Residents will soon see new displays lighting up the neighbourhoods of Shawbirch, Brooklands, and Arleston, alongside a striking display on the busy Morrisons roundabout.
The new lights also have the capability to change colour, with the hope of an enhanced display to mark the New Year celebrations. The Council reports the lights come with a five-year guarantee and an expected lifespan of twelve years, meaning they could potentially be used for other town events throughout the year.
Wellington Mayor, Reg Snell, commented on the significant investment: “I am delighted to be switching on our new lights which represent a significant investment by the Town Council this year. Christmas is a time for the whole community, and it was a priority for us to ensure the festive spirit extended beyond the town centre. Bringing these beautiful new displays to Shawbirch, Brooklands and Arleston, ensures our whole town shares in the magic.”
He added: “I invite everyone to join us for what promises to be a wonderful free switch-on event, one of the highlights of the Wellington events calendar.”
The festivities on Saturday, November 29 will begin at 12 noon with activities for all ages at various locations. There will be performances in the Square by groups including the Shrewsbury Musical Theatre Company, TADLOP and Wellington Brass Band. Other entertainment includes the ‘Silly Santa Science Show’, a puppet show, and a preview from the Belfrey Theatre and Wellington Community Musical at All Saints. Father Christmas will also be meeting children in his grotto at the All Saints Parish Centre.
Wellington Orbit will also be showing ‘festive screenings’ throughout the day. The main event will see the new look lights switched on by Mayor Reg Snell during the Christmas singalong in the Square, starting at 4:50 pm. The full event will close at 6 pm, with Market Street closed to vehicles from 9 am.
The neighbourhood celebrations will continue on Monday, December 1, with separate switch-on events. The lights will be turned on at Shawbirch at 5:00 pm, Brooklands at 5:45 pm, and Arleston at 6:15 pm. Mayor Snell, assisted by Santa, will perform the switches, and mulled wine, mince pies, and gifts for children will be available.
