Film critic Jason Wright reviews new releases

Jason Wright takes in two of the latest cinema releases which offer drastically different experiences, He offered contrasting opinions on the family drama Regretting You (2025) and Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie.

Wright found that Regretting You, despite having a promising cast, “manages to turn it all into a two-hour snooze.”

He criticised the pacing of the family drama, stating it “drags from scene one,” with emotional moments feeling “stretched to the point of exhaustion.”

While Wright noted that McKenna Grace is a magnetic young actor who brings intensity to her role, he felt her talent was “not enough to keep the film afloat.”

He concluded that Regretting You ultimately consists of “beautiful performances trapped in a painfully dull story.”

Meanwhile, the new children’s film, Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie, is proving a massive success with toddlers, but not with Wright.

The critic confessed that as an adult without children, he found the experience “overwhelmingly sugary, loud, and a little exhausting.” He suggested the plot felt thin and the songs were relentless.

However, Wright acknowledged that for families with young children, the movie is a definite hit. He commented that the bright colours, cute characters, and stream of fun would likely leave children “glued to the screen the whole time.”

His final verdict for the animated film was clear: “adorable if you’re parenting a toddler, but for anyone else… maybe give it a pass.”
